Flemish tiles

Flemish tiles — contemporary ceramic craft from East Flanders

The name refers to the place where the work is made: a small East Flanders atelier in dialogue with a Flemish material culture of stone, garden rooms, old surfaces, and restrained interiors.

That setting is not copied literally. It guides proportion, colour, relief, and restraint, while glaze research and contemporary applications give the collections their own identity.

Vlaamse Tegelmeesters does not claim an unbroken historical tradition. The atelier makes contemporary ceramic tiles with respect for handwork, local production, and the visible reaction of mineral, glaze, and fire.

Detail of a handmade Flemish ceramic relief tile

Place remains present without becoming decoration.

Some reliefs draw from patterns and rhythms familiar in Flemish applied arts. Other collections focus on fields of colour: cobalt, mineral green, burgundy, bronze, and turquoise.

Every tile is shaped, dried, bisque fired, sanded, washed, glazed, and fired again in East Flanders. That process — rather than a historicising motif — is the centre of the contemporary craft.
